The farm where Washington and his family lived was called the "Mansion House Farm." This is the part of the plantation that visitors see today. Washington developed the property's 500 acres to create a fitting setting for a country gentleman. He designed the grounds to include a deep border of woods, rolling meadows, serpentine walkways, a pleasure garden, a kitchen garden,and groves of trees. Between the Mansion and the shores of the Potomac River lay an extensive park.

The Cemetery is the final resting place of over 75,000 people including many notable Virginians such as Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, General J. E. B. Stuart, and writer Ellen Glasgow as well as Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States. Also buried here are the remains of over 18,000 Condederate dead. The cemetery takes its name from the groves of holly trees on the grounds.

Manassas National Battlefield park was established in 1940 to preserve the scene of two major Civil War battles. Located a few miles north of the prized railroad junction of Manassas, Virginia, the peaceful Virginia countryside bore witness to clashes between the armies of the North and South in 1861 and 1862.

Shenandoah National Park itself is always open, but the Skyline Drive which is the only road through Shenandoah National Park closes some portions during hunting season from dusk to early morning. This road also closes in inclement weather for safety reasons. The highest visitation is during the fall color season and the summer months. Traffic can be heavy on Skyline Drive during these weekends.
