Bellagio is a well-known tourist location and elegant health resort situated at the top of the headland that divides the lake in two (the west branch towards Como and the east branch towards Lecco). It is 30 km from the village of Como.

Comiglia is the only one of the villages of Cinque Terre that is built not on the coast itself but on a high promontory. It is dominated by the church of St. Peter, built in 1334. There are 386 steps from the train staion to get to the village or you can take a bus. We walked!

established in the 12th century by people coming down from the mountain village of Volastra.

Starting from the north, the first of the Cinque Terre is the fortified centre of Monterosso al Mare, on the top of St. Christopher’s hill. It is a coastal town in a valley, its most prominent features being the church of St John, built in 1244, with its bell-tower, originally an isolated watch-tower, the ruins of the old castle, and the 17th Capuchin monastery which dominates the town.

The most southerly of the villages is Riomaggiore, another medieval foundation. Its houses line the narrow valley of the Maggiore stream (also now covered). The village is dominated by the church of

Walking through Rio Terra Antonio Foscarini, will bring you out to Zattere along side of the church known as the Gesuati. To your right are the church, its neighbor, Santa Maria della Visitazione, and the Ponte Lungho, which spans the Rio di San Trovaso. To your left, you can see the Punta della Dogana, and across the canal the Giudecca.

VARENNA is arguably the nicest place on the lake. Shaded by pines and planes, and almost completely free of souvenir shops the village falls down steep narrow alleyways to the lakefront. If you are feeling energetic, you could haul up the hill to the Castello de Vezio, allegedly founded by the Lombard Queen Theodolinda, for some great views.

Castle ruins of Varenna dal castello at Vezio a town of about 50 inhabitants. There are two walking routes up to the castle. One longer but more gradual and another that was steeper but shorter. Both routes are pretty strenuous. We drove to a parking lot below the castle and walked up.
