Lu's Seafood is an awesome Taiwanese place, at the moment. This place will serve some hardcore Taiwanese cuisine, like pig tripe, frogs, and smelly tofu (a local favorite). But for those with more Western sensibilities but desiring Oriental deliciousness, there are plenty of options. They have shredded beef with chilis, fried pork chops, fried chicken, beef noodles with shacha sauce, awesome soups with fresh noodles, battered fluke, watercress with garlic, and lots more. They also have ghetto Chinese staples like chicken with broccoli, but you will be missing out. For this awesome food, you'll probably be out less than $10 per person. And it's usually open until 4am (NYC is awesome!) They switch management every once in a while, so the food is sometimes good and sometimes not; right now it's good, so get some while the getting is good. :)

Mickey's Place

Having been to Japan back in 2008, I came back a sushi snob. No longer could I stand most of the sushi I found in the States. There was just a certain way that it is prepared in Japan that gives it some critical nuances; it's the right cuts, the right temperature, the right time, the right rice, the right presentation. And the variety! American's generally only have tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, maybe some mackeral, fluke, red snapper and shrimp. There are so many awesome fish we miss out on. So what was all that about? I found this gem that takes me back to Japan every time I visit. While Mickey's Place caters to American tastes by providing the standards and different rolls (rolls are not all that popular in Japan, and there's no spicy tuna anything), you order the chirashi and you will fall in love. All of the dishes are delicious and the owner Mickey-san is always there to make sure it is awesome. The only other way to get a hardcore Japanese experience is to go to Manhattan and pay 4 times the price.
